Greek Yogurt Mac & Cheese

This looks like a tasty recipe that a lot of people are talking about. I know I’m going to try it soon. Check out her blog for more ideas.

The healthy mac and cheese recipe you can feel good about serving your family.

So rich and creamy – it might be the creamiest mac and cheese recipe you will ever find… even without any butter or flour! This is healthy comfort food at its absolute yummiest.

A few weeks ago, my mother called me up after work and mentioned she was trying to figure out what to make as a quick and easy dinner for herself and my dad. At the time, I had an idea for a Greek yogurt mac and cheese recipe in my head… but I’d never actually made it. I said she could try the idea out if she felt up for experimenting.

Happily, my mother is a good sport and accepted the job. I wrote down the very basic gist of a recipe, sent it to her as an email, and she got to work…

A few hours later, she sent me a reply email that the meal was fantastic – a keeper for sure!

Chick-fil-A testing new breakfast menu with chicken and waffles, Greek yogurt

Chick-fil-A has started testing a new breakfast menu at select locations around the country, including its 12 restaurants in the Inland Empire. Known for its fried chicken cutlet sandwiches, the Atlanta-based chain is looking to expand its morning offerings to include new “better for you” selections as well as a few new savory items, the company said in a release.

For a mix of sweet and savory, Chick-fil-A has introduced Chicken & Waffles for breakfast with a fried boneless breast of chicken alongside a warm Belgian-style waffle with a caramelized sugar crunch and the maple syrup baked on the inside (440 calories, 9 grams of fat). There’s also new Cinnamon Swirls, the chain’s version of mini cinnamon rolls, served warm with cream cheese icing (310 calories, 17 grams of fat).

“As our customer base continues to grow, so does the variety of our customers’ appetites and dietary preferences,” said Brian Wray, manager of menu development for Chick-fil-A Inc. in a statement. “Our customers have been asking for products that are health-conscious, easily portable, as well as offerings that suit regional appetites.”

Some of the new, more health-conscious selections have fewer than 300 calories. They join an existing trial breakfast menu that was launched last fall. The less-than-300-calorie breakfasts include the Egg White Chicken Grill (300 calories, 6 grams of fat) with a piece of grilled chicken, egg whites and American cheese on a toasted multigrain English muffin, the Greek Yogurt Parfait (110 calories, 2.5 grams of fat) with honey vanilla Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries, blueberries and Harvest Nut Granola or chocolate cookie crumbs, Multigrain Oatmeal (140 calories, 3 grams of fat) with steel-cut oatmeal with flax, whole wheat and buckwheat, blueberries, strawberries and cinnamon brown sugar on the side.

Prices start at $1.59 for the Cinnamon Swirls and $4.29 for the Chicken & Waffles. The Egg White Chicken Grill starts at $3.35 and the Greek Yogurt Parfait and Multigrain Oatmeal each start at $2.49. Prices vary based on individual markets.

Chick-fil-A also partnered with THRIVE Farmers Coffee to offer the farmer-direct brew in its restaurants. The money from each cup sold goes directly to THRIVE’s network of farmers in Central America. The coffee is available at all Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide. The price for a hot coffee starts at $1.59 and the ice coffee starts at $2.29.

The new breakfast items will be available for a limited time in the Inland Empire as well as Philadelphia, Middle Georgia and Memphis, Tenn.

Happily ever after: Scientists arrange protein-nanoparticle marriage

Researchers have discovered a way to easily and effectively fasten proteins to nanoparticles — essentially an arranged marriage — by simply mixing them together. The biotechnology is in its infancy. But it already has shown promise for developing an HIV vaccine and as a way to target cancer cells.

Reducing global tobacco use

Although global efforts to cut tobacco use have had some success, more can be done to reduce the number of deaths from smoking, according to a new commentary. More than 170 countries have signed the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control agreement since it was adopted in 2005. However, smoking rates are still high in many low- and middle-income countries compared with Canada and other high-income countries where efforts to curb smoking have been more successful.

Putting the ‘education’ in ‘educational’ apps

New apps developed for children come online every day and many of them are marketed or labeled as ‘educational’ — but how can we tell which of these thousands of apps will actually help children learn? In a comprehensive new report, a team of researchers integrates research from scientific disciplines like psychological science, linguistics, and neuroscience to provide an evidence-based guide that parents, educators, and app designers alike can use to evaluate the quality of so-called ‘educational’ apps.

Vampire squid discovery shows how little we know of the deep sea

Among soft-bodied cephalopods, vampire squid live life at a slower pace. At ocean depths from 500 to 3,000 meters, they don’t swim so much as float, and they get by with little oxygen while consuming a low-calorie diet of zooplankton and detritus. Now, researchers have found that vampire squid differ from all other living coleoid cephalopods in their reproductive strategy as well.

Pancreatic cancer breakthrough: Scientists turn cancer cells into normal cells

Scientists have found a novel avenue for therapeutic intervention of the “silent cancer.” A new research study has shown that pancreatic cancer cells can be coaxed to revert back toward normal cells by introducing a protein called E47. E47 binds to specific DNA sequences and controls genes involved in growth and differentiation. The research provides hope for a new treatment approach for the more than 40,000 people who die from the disease each year in the United States.
